Why Sterling Silver Jewelry Prices Are Increasing...

Unfortunately, the volatile precious metals market has caused me to raise the prices of my sterling silver jewelry. Sterling silver is at its highest price in over 30 years. Sterling silver is no longer the “inexpensive” precious metal we have grown accustom in the last several decades. Silver mines are closing faster than they are being opened. Additionally, silver is in high demand due to its use in solar panels. As the Green industry grows around the world, so will the price of silver. In the past 5 years, the price of sterling silver has increased a shocking 360%.

What Is Sterling Silver Anyway?

The term, STERLING SILVER, describes the silver content of an alloy. The phrase " sterling silver " originated in England, more than 800 years ago to describe an alloy consisting of 92.5 % silver. The remaining 7.5% of the alloy metal is typically copper. Nickel, zinc and other metals have also been used but are not very common.

When used together, silver and copper have proven to be the most effective combination because the addition of copper adds strength and durability to the silver. Silver, by itself, is just too soft and malleable to use.

Edward I of England, established an early trade rule for silversmiths, decreeing sterling must contain 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper.
