COMUS
Comus is the oldest Mardi Gras organization in New Orleans. The men who met in 1857 to create Comus came up with the term "KREWE". Hence, they were the first to form a secret Carnival society. Their first procession took place on February 24, 1857 in the city. Comus is derived from the Greek word, Komus which means to revel or a company of revelers.
Supposedly, one of the founders of Comus was fond of the poet John Milton who wrote The Masque of Comus. Eventually the term, "KREWE" would serve to exemplify all Carnival organizations in New Orleans. For instance, today there is Krewe of Zulu, Krewe of Hermes, Krewe of Orpheus and Krewe of Endymion just to name a few.
