The Academy of Holy Angels began so that the young women of New Orleans could be sheltered and schooled in a proper manner. In 1853, the Marianites purchased the property we know today as Holy Angels from Celeste Powell, a free woman of color, for $275.00. The school is located in the upper 9th ward on St. Claude Avenue. The campus houses several very handsome historic buildings. The school has closed, but it has a dedicated alumni.
